Annual Summer Trip To

Jindo National Gugak Center

in partnership with NJ Camp Friendship

The New York Korean Performing Arts Center proudly presented ten years of Summer Trip to Korea: A Cultural and Performing Arts Experience. This trip is designed for second generation Korean Americans, especially Korean adoptees, and their parents. This Korean Cultural Experience Program has been an ongoing part of NYKPAC’s educational program since 2006. On this two-and-a-half-week trip, students from middle school through college age participated in an intensive performance workshop at the JINDO NATIONAL GUGAK CENTER in Jindo, South Korea. Located at the foot of the Yeongsan Mountain, the center is renowned for its role in preserving and perpetuating the heritage of traditional Korean music and dance in this southern Korean province through music performances, cultural experiences and musical studies. Under the direction of master instructors, students learned traditional instruments such as janggo, buk, haegeum and gayageum. Your stay in Jindo will culminate with performing on stage at the center.

NJ Camp Friendship

NJ Camp Friendship was founded in 1984 by the parents of Korean adopted children in order to provide a cultural experience for their children. They believed that such an experience would enhance their children’s self-esteem while building a sense of national pride in their heritage and its traditions. Camp Friendship operates a one-week day camp during the summer for Korean-born adoptees and their siblings entering grades Kindergarten through eighth grade. Camp is held during the third week of each July and takes place at the Shrine of St. Joseph in Stirling, NJ. Classes include: traditional drumming and dance, traditional and modern music, art, folk lore, brush painting, language, cooking and tae kwon do. Its instructors include professionals from the Korean American community and exchange students from Hankuk Academy in the Republic of Korea.
